Nel wanted a modular production facility with lower infrastructure requirements, adapted to variable energy sources and grid balancing. To achieve this goal, Inventas established a holistic design process that allowed multiple work streams to run in parallel.

In this way, technical requirements, the value proposition to Nels' customers and practical considerations were addressed simultaneously, and needs were quickly transformed into concepts and visualized to be presented externally and anchored internally.
"The design process we ran with Inventas is also an inspiration for how we will continue to develop technology for products in the future." – Marius Bornstein, Technology Director, Nel Hydrogen

In the initial phase, Inventas contributed a team responsible for process and project management and mechanical concept generation. The team then functioned as an integrated part of Nels' project organization, with a primary focus on mechanical product development and design. The result is a prototype plant that proves the concept, supports Nels' business model and is ready for further piloting and industrialization.
"I have used the report that was created by Inventas after the preliminary project a lot. It is incredibly valuable in communication internally and to stakeholders. Having sketches, drawings and models that show how the product can look, be used and will function is crucial to explaining the product in a good way." - Marius Bornstein, Technology Director, Nel Hydrogen.
A multidisciplinary design process led to several parallel work streams to address technical requirements, Nel's value proposition to its customers, and practical challenges. We have gone from needs to concepts and prototypes that can be presented externally and anchored internally.
The result is a pressurized alkaline hydrogen processing plant that:
-
Takes up little space and is flexible in use
-
Reduces the need for heavy infrastructure
-
Is easy to scale
-
Is adapted to variable energy sources and grid balancing
-
Provides better overview and control in operation
